A BRIEF HISTORY OF GAMBLING AND ITS EVOLVEMENT

The term gambling is defined as the wagering or staking of one's valuables against another person’s valuables, in any game, event or situation all with the aim of getting it all or winning it all if the game or event goes on the person’s favor. Thus with this explanation, there is no doubt that the history of gambling can be traced to the origins of man himself. The history of gambling goes back to the earliest writings and tools discovered by scientists or anthropologists in tombs, caves and other archaic places.

Gambling was planned and organized, what this means is that gambling in the ancient times was gravely controlled. This was seen in the conduct of gambling in the history of the ancient Chinese, Jewish Talmud, Islam, Rome, Buddhism, and even in ancient Egypt where hardcore gamblers would be sentenced into forced servitude in the quarries or mines of the Egyptians. There is also, the concept that gambling is a spiritual thing as well; this clearly illustrated in the casting of noticeable sticks and other objects and giving meaning to its results.

In other words, man used the means of gambling to look for solutions to his problems and to get the answers of his gods of which he had belief in, the answers he attained in the use of the gambling method determined the choices of his gods on his matter at hand. In the bible and in the old testament precisely, it is recorded that the people used or cast lots to divide properties and this was even demonstrated in the new testament as well, where the Roman guards threw lots to determine who would get the vestment of Jesus Christ during his crucifixion.

Moreover, the issue of casting lot was mentioned in the four gospels of the New Testament and this significantly was pointed out by anti-gamblers who had been crusading against the engagement of gambling for spiritual or moral purposes. But, in the archaic period casting lots was not considered as a thing of gambling but, it was instead considered as a means of knowing a man’s destiny or a man’s fate.

Anthropologists as well pointed to the truth that the use of gambling was more widespread in societies where they had a common faith in the gods and spirits whose generosity they could look for. Thus, the casting or throwing of lots, has been employed and used in many traditions to bestow justice and point out to malefactors in situations of uncertain trials. This is clearly shown by the Greek meaning of justice which can be pronounced as ‘Dike’ which means to throw or throwing dice for justice.

The European history has a part in the evolvement of gambling. The European records of gambling are restrained by many decrees, edicts, and encyclicals which serves as a platform for the banning and condemning of gambling, which meanderingly testifies to its popularity in all forms of the society. This went on until the 15th century when the government allowed for a systematized gambling on a large scale, all for the purposes of raising money through lotteries.

The systematic form of gambling was introduced into China and there developed a new form of gambling in China called the keno. The allowed permit for legal gambling saw a wide revolution in the history of gambling as gambling was shifted from the lottery and casting lot system to an earlier developed system as mathematicians began to invent new ways of which the games could be played, hence this brought the beginning of dice and cards and this later evolved to what is now known as the probability or possibility theory.

However, before this time in prehistoric Rome and Greece, there was a form of organized permitted sports betting and this same practice evolved to the 18th century and the late 18th century as well. during this time, there was a steady, albeit irregular movement in the official attitude of which gambling was conducted, it was moved from the realm of being considered a sinful event to a normal vice stemming from human weakness or lack of self-control and then finally it was overlooked as a cause of human weakness to being seeing as a sort of entertainment activity and harmless vice.

Consequently, in the modern times, the invention and the use of the internet has popularized the concept of gambling and this also has given rise to the growth or invention of many other types of gambling in diverse ways. Thus, it has been recorded that in the beginning of the 21st century, an estimated five out of six people in the western world or western nations gamble on a usual basis and this is giving concerns as a rapidly growing problem.

This prediction of this rapid growth of gamblers in the 21st century was first noticed in the 20th century, when a huge number of individuals experienced social and personal problems resulting from what was termed as a pathological gambling; which can be explained as a state of which an individual is unable to control themselves from overspending in a gambling game or stopping themselves from gambling at all. This was further discovered in the 1980s and the 1990s, where it was noticed by medical professionals in many countries as a psychological disorder which afflicts slightly a more than 1 percent of the population and then to help with this case various mode of therapy applications was developed to solve the growing problem.

The people who experience this pathological conditions experience or show a failure in resistance to desires, urges or temptations to achieve an act, which could be harmful to themselves or to other people as well. the person in this state experience a high feeling of tension before they are likely to commit the act and after they have committed the act they experience a satisfaction or gratification after they have done the act. The people in this category shows behaviors which include a pathological setting of fire, pathological gambling, and pathological stealing also known as kleptomania or the pathological pulling of one’s body features such as hair, nails, and others.
